Sometime around 1880, the church records start calling his wife Martha a widow. So, it's possible that someone in the U.S. informed his family that he'd died, or perhaps he'd stayed in touch but the letters eventually stopped coming so they assumed he'd died. We'll probably never find out, as we don't even know where in the U.S. he lived.
